The I

The “i” is a British national morning paper published in London by Daily Mail and General Trust and distributed across the United Kingdom. Its aims is at “readers and lapsed readers” of all ages and commuters with limited time, and was originally launched in 2010 as a sister paper to The Independent.

James Curran notes

“the watchdog role is said to override in importance all other functions in media and to dictate the form in which the media should be organised”

“once the media becomes subject to public regulation it will lose its bite as a watchdog and may even be transformed into a snarling rottweiler in the service of the state”

“the primary democratic role of the media is to act as a public watchdog” A watchdog is someone who protects the public from the “shadows” as they become as anonymous as possible to fight and expose the truth for the public and this quote is saying how the media is part of the “people” and help the “people”.

-The media is made to inform us the public but yet needs a sense of regulation as if the media has no restrictions they can publish whatever they want rather it be false or completely unacceptable so the government has put regulations onto the media but then they have a sense of control upon the media and can filter what goes through also known as “flack” so the government could stop negative information against them to never be published for the public

Habermas

Making connections with each over than rather underneath the control of the government

The public sphere: a safe place for people to talk about the government

Free and liberal press: Cohan, the media shouldn’t be controlled by government. freedom is needed.

Horizontal; rather than vertical. Less hierarchy, more freedom.

Rise of people: they start to debate and challenge and Habermas believes this is healthy

Mass media and globalization has changed and affected the public sphere as people don’t discuss issues in person anymore

Manufacturing Consent

  • Structures of ownership
  • The role of advertising
  • Links with ‘The Establishment’
  • Diversionary tactics – ‘flack’
  • Uniting against a ‘common enemy’

common enemy: The unanimous target that everyone is made to stand against for example it could be terrorists or a plague

Flack: when critical, unwanted Infomation get disrupted and manipulated so it could become discredited or not even published in the first place

Noah Chomsky

Avram Noam Chomsky is an American linguist, philosopher, cognitive scientist, historian, social critic, and political activist. Sometimes called “the father of modern linguistics”, Chomsky is also a major figure in analytic philosophy and one of the founders of the field of cognitive science

In the 1960s, linguist Noam Chomsky proposed a revolutionary idea: We are all born with an innate knowledge of grammar that serves as the basis for all language acquisition. In other words, for humans, language is a basic instinct. The theory, however, has long been met with widespread criticism

Contribution to Psychology Chomsky is best known for his influence on linguistics, specifically, the development of transformational grammar. Chomsky believed that formal grammar was directly responsible for a person’s ability to understand and interpret mere utterances.

Thesis: transformational Analysis (1955)
