How would you light the opening of ‘The 3 Sisters?

Use a WHAT-HOW-WHY structure.
My lighting design for the start of the play would be naturalistic in keeping with the style of the set and acting.(WHAT – AIM – OVERVIEW)
(HOW) I would use a warm pale amber side light (“sunshine”) to shine through the side door Stage Right. This would pass through the side door and leave the pattern of the door windows on the floor like a gobo. Overhead and front lights would be focused on the sofa Center Stage and create the illusion of a skylight in the ceiling. (WHY) This would make this the focus of the room compared to the gloomier corners.
(HOW) I would use some practical lights like 2 small wall-mounted gas lights on the walls. These would have a warm flickering glow. In the fire place I would have a fake fire effect. Then I would have a low angled red light focused on the fireplace and the furniture around it to show the glow of the fire. (WHY) Even though this is “midday and spring” I think the Russians would keep a fire going.
