Match Cuts

Eyeline match: A cut from a character looking somewhere to where they are looking.

This example from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, puts the audience into Harry’s perspective to understand what he is seeing and how he is feeling.

Graphic match: A cut that links two shots together that have a similar composition.

This example from the film Hot Fuzz uses a graphic match cut to show the changing of time, and how that influences the character’s emotions.

Match on action: A cut from one shot to another during an action, usually to emphasize the action.

Match on action is common in fight scenes, such as this fight scene in the film The Batman, where the punch is emphasized.

‘Whiplash’ First Response

Critical Score: 8.4/10

A memorable scene for me would be the opening scene where Andrew first meets Fletcher. This scene sets off the tone for the rest of the movie as it establishes the relationship between the two and constructs a sense of tension. The camera shots and mis-en-scene used also adds to this tension as it creates an abusive tone from the get-go.

Memorable Scene

when he is performing after being in a car crash due to the building of tension once he gets on stage also the last scene due to the fast pace editing and the conclusion where we see fletchers eyes smile with the extreme close up

Rating: 10/10

Memorable scene- final scene ; the editing was impeccable and the cuts between Andrew and Fletcher stood out to me as they highlight him guiding Andrew therefore it provides a calmness to contrast the chaotic side of Andrew playing and Fletcher’s satisfaction of him.

9.5/10

Memorable scene-

When Andrew is running to his first studio band session presuming he is late due to the fast paced editing which creates a sense of paranoia.

In addition the final scene for many reasons including the near perfect use of cinematography specifically the use of such different shots and camera angles.

Whiplash Ending Scene (whole ending) - YouTube

In my opinion, this film is a 9/10, for strong editing that follows the pace of the music and movement. The most memorable scene was the 11-minute finale at the JVC competition, where Fletcher gives Andrew the wrong music in an attempt to destroy his career before it starts.
