Memorable scene- The beach scene with the soldier going into the waves and ultimately committing suicide has impacted me the most; despite the desperate and chaotic situation this scene appears to be orderly and unchaotic.
activity 7-favourite soundtrack
My favourite Film soundtrack is Sufjan Stevens’s “Mystery of love”. Besides the fact that this soundtrack fits in with the summer aesthetics of the film it would also relate and connect to the main character’s experiences from that summer, Elio. The lyrics also seem to correlate with his feelings and the soundtrack just creates an overall dreamy ambiance to the film.
activity 6-voice over/naration
A voice over/ narration is when one person hears the voice of a character or narrator speaking but the character in question is not speaking those words on screen.
An example of this could be in “YOU” during Joe’s narration of his thoughts about the other characters. Narration could be used here to give insight into the characters thoughts and ideas and let the audience know certain factors that other characters on screen don’t. Such as when he describes what he thinks of the new people he met.
activity 5- example of a movie which uses leitmotif to enhance meaning for the audience
A leitmotif is when the same soundtrack plays multiple times in a film to introduce the same idea or movie.
In THOR RAGNAROK the same soundtrack was played at the beginning of the movie when Thor was at the peak of his abilities and his power was unmatchable and through the film we get to see Thor’s powers fall; towards the end however, the same soundtrack starts playing when his powers rise and grow again indicating a sense of power and confidence making him seem unstoppable.
activity 4 examples of sounds made by a foley artist
Usually most original sounds from movie scenes are removed as their quality is very poor, which is why they are later completely recreated by a Foley artist.
Some of the sounds that a Foley Artist can make on a films soundtrack could be: footsteps, falling, clothes rustling, paper folding, doors closing/ slamming, glass breaking, punching etc.
activity 2 & 3 diegetic and non diegetic sound in shawn of the dead + definitions
Diegetic- any sound that characters on screen can hear like dialogue in this instance
Non diegetic- any sounds that the audience can hear but the characters on screen can’t eg: creepy music when zombies are getting closer;
Needle drop: this is when a song that already exists is used in a movie; when the movie uses a song that wasn’t written in the soundtrack.
The shepherd tone: sound consisting of sine waves separated by octaves; this creates the auditory illusion of a tone that seems to increase or decrease in pitch but never actually gets higher or lower.
Leitmotif- music that connects and relates with the the situation, character or emotion.
Ambient sound- background sound like birds or rain
Sound perspective: the distance of a sound source given by its pitch, volume, timber etc.
Synchronous sound- sound that is matched with the actions and movement;
Asynchronous sound: use when the director wants to create tension- the viewer can hear the sound but does not hear its source.
Sound bridge- a sound/ soundtrack that is connected and blends in from a scene to another; eg- in The Matrix when the music from the club blends in with Neo’s alarm.
the difference between the role of a sound editor and a sound mixer
SOUND EDITORS create the sounds ( that may or may not already exist in real life), and they edit movie dialogue music, and effects to create a soundtrack that corresponds with a certain scene.
SOUND MIXERS mix and balance the audio as it is recorded; they also control the volume and tone of the sounds.

Memorable scene- final scene ; the editing was impeccable and the cuts between Andrew and Fletcher stood out to me as they highlight him guiding Andrew therefore it provides a calmness to contrast the chaotic side of Andrew playing and Fletcher’s satisfaction of him.
match cuts
MATCH ON ACTION- a type of film transition that cuts from one shot to a closer shot in order to emphasize an action; for example when a fight is taking place the camera shots are closer to the characters faces or bodies.
GRAPHIC MATCH-links two scenes through the use of similar elements such as colour, aesthetic etc. Used to connect scenes normally to create meaning.
EYELINE MATCH- indicates what a character is seeing while also making their emotions clear to the audience and emphasizes them.
