The Story of Film an Odyssey (Section 1)

1895-1918: The World Discovers A New Art Form

  1. Employees Leaving the Lumiere Factory (1985)
  2. A tracking shot from the front of a vehicle to show the process of it moving like a ghost
  3. first use of a close up and cutting as well as editing being used to show continuity.
  4. Florence Lawrence

1903-1918: The Hollywood Dream

  1. The process of film making had been copyrighted on the east coast of the united states, so many moved to California in order to escape these laws and not have to pay to use the patented processes.
  2. Denmark, it was the most innovative place for the film industry and important for the industry.
  3. HAXAN- Kristian Levring, Dreyer- The Passion of the Joan Arc.

Birth of a Nation was directed by D W Griffith, it has continued to cause controversy due to the racist propaganda within the movie. Many see the movie as nothing more than racist propaganda due to it bringing the KKK back into popularity, whereas some people see it as a impressively produced film due to the costumes used as well as the techniques used throughout.

Cinema going, in Jersey

During the golden age of cinema there was 6 cinemas in Jersey.

Currently in jersey there are 10 cinema screens all of which are located at Cineworld.

Some independent spaces for film in Jersey are Howard Davis. The Art Centre as well as The Art House and The Grand Hotel.

Cinema screens have declined in recent years due to a decline in consumer interest in cinema going as well as the recent pandemic. Some implications of this is that many films wont have an official premiere and will go straight to digital such as Netflix and Amazon prime.

Job descriptions

Role 1: Editor-

A film editor, sometimes called a film and video editor, a movie editor, or an editor for film, is a technical professional who removes unnecessary footage and assembles the remaining pieces together to make finished works. Film Editors work on movies, TV programs, commercials, music videos, and other pieces of video content.

Film editors collaborate with other film professionals, including directors, sound editors, and cinematographers. Their work makes sure that films represent their director’s vision and tell their stories in the most engaging and effective ways. When film editors finish their work, the viewing experience should be seamless, as if the footage was never edited at all.

My inspiration for editing is Zach Staenberg. He has edited films such as The Matrix and The Matrix Reloaded as well as China Lake.

Role 2: Director-

Directors are the creative leads of the film. They hold the creative vision throughout the whole process, from pre-production through to the final edit.

They are employed by the executive producer or producer, who is ultimately in charge of a production. Directors start with a script, and work with a screenwriter and sometimes a script editing team. It’s not uncommon for the director to be the screenwriter as well.

My inspiration for direction is David Fincher. He has directed films such as Se7en, Zodiac and Fight Club.

Role 3: Cinematographer-

Cinematographers play an essential role in film production, dictating the overall look and visual style of a motion picture, television show, music video, or advert. They’re the person responsible for bringing a director’s vision to life on screen, handling all the technical aspects of visual storytelling.

Cinematography 101: The Ultimate Guide to Becoming a DP

Also known as a director of photography (DP or DoP), the cinematographer heads up the film crew and light crew on the film set. They’re generally involved in the entirety of the film production, from the early storyboarding stage – working on the in-depth visual narrative – right through to post-production.

My personal inspiration for cinematography is Dan Laustsen. He has filmed John Wick 2 and 3 as well as Silent Hill and Nightwatch.

portfolio chosen roles

  1. Editor- I picked this because I want to develop my editing skills.
  2. Director- I picked this because I am interested in the art of directing and Mise En Scene.
  3. Cinematographer (specialise)- I want to specialise in this because I find it interesting and want to use different angels to express the emotions in a scene

joker project reflection

During our project there was many times that reshooting was needed due to either me or Noah laughing or one of us being in the back of a shot which we shouldn’t be in or just not being ready or not being told that we were filming.

For next time I believe it would be better if we got counted in as we knew when the shot was being recorded

sound

Sound editing is the job which involves moving a project’s audio from the production to post-production stage. The main difference between sound editing vs. sound mixing is that editing focuses on the production, while mixing takes the edited product and hones it during post-production.

An example of a Diegetic sound within the Shaun of the Dead clip is the sound of the objects being thrown at the zombies.

An example of a Non-Diegetic sound is the sound effect heard when a cut in footage happens.

A needle drop is when music that wasn’t recorded for a movie is added into a movie. It may be used to set the tone of a scene or to contrast it.

Some examples of a Foley artists work on a film soundtrack include the sounds of birds or waves.

Another movie that uses a leitmotif is from the movie “Jaws” when the shark bites someone.

Another film that uses narration is Blade Runner, the narration in the movie was added in post as the studio believed the movie was to confusing for the audience to understand.

My favourite film soundtrack is The Dark Knight, this is because of the leitmotif they gave the main character of Batman.

mise en scene

One film I believe to have excellent mise en scene is Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. This movie being set not within our own world meant that the mise en scene in this movie had to be perfect in order for the audience to suspend their disbelief and become immersed in the world. One way they do this in this film is through the prop design. In particular I believe the design of the weapons shown throughout the movie do this, although looking futuristic and advanced beyond what is being used now they also look practical and like they would work in real life as the design is realistic.
