leitmotif

A leitmotif is a musical phrase within a film that is associated with a character, animal or moment.

For example in Jaws one of the main Leitmotifs is Jaw itself as when the shark is near a musical phrase begins to play to convey a sense of fear and anxiety to the audience and let them gain tension and know that the shark is near and about to strike.

sounds used by foley artists

some sounds that could be created by a Foley artist is walking, the swoosh of a bat or creek of a floorboard. Also a foley artist could use musical intruments for the sound track.

For example in the film ‘school of rock’ a Foley artist could’ve played the musical instruments instead of the student as they were young and may not have acquired the correct amount of skill yet.

Needle drop definition

A “needle drop” is slang used in the film industry to describe when a pre-existing song is used in a movie. In the best cases, the audio and video become intertwined to the point where people can’t disassociate the song from the film.

Sound editor-

an audio engineer who oversees the production audio crew, mixes and balances the audio as it is recorded, and works to identify and solve the many problems that arise in this field: background noise, echo, distortion. (berklee.edu)

Tracking shot- a shot which follows a subject around the scene.

This is well executed in the film the shining when they follow the character Danny around the hotel.

pan- creates a 360 around a character or the character creates a 360 around the camera. Also the camera could scape across the landscape and pan around the area.

In the sound of music the camera creates a 360 around the main character as she sings.

Zoom- Zoom shots are used to zoom in on characters or landscapes during important moments of a scene.

In the film ratatouille the camera zooms into 2 characters as they are having a semimetal moment.
