job description

Director-

Directors are the creative leads of the film. They hold the creative vision throughout the whole process, from pre-production through to the final edit. They are employed by the executive producer or producer, who is ultimately in charge of a production.

Directors tell actors what they want done and where to stand what to-do and also share their creative vision for the film with the team to help produce the best film possible for the public audiences.

  • Develop and implement plans and objectives for the department in an effective and innovative fashion.
    • Oversee and coordinate daily operations.
    • Maintain compliance with external regulations and internal policies.
    • Assess and report progress in meeting department objectives.

Cinematographer-

a cinematographer is in charge of the camera and the lighting crew. They’re the person responsible for creating the look, colour, lighting, and for framing of every single shot in a film.

The cinematographer controls the camera and what the camera does and how it moves. The angles of the camera is decided by the cinematographer and the cinematographer has to use lighting to control how light or dark something appears on camera. This is why the cinematographer also has reign over the lighting to ensure that people can be seen on camera.

  • An eye for detail and a mind for fast invention.
  • Thorough understanding of lighting techniques, light colour, shade and manipulation.
  • Strong technical knowledge of cameras and the film production process.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Strong team management skills.
  • Excellent listening ability.

Editor-

An editor manages material such as camera footage, dialogue, sound effects, graphics and special effects to produce a final film or video product. This is a key role in the post-production process and your skills can determine the quality and delivery of the finished result.

The editor puts all the clips together to produce the final product to the audience. The editor also choses the best clips and best shots to go into the film.

Narration

Narration is the use of a written or spoken commentary to convey a story to an audience. Narration is conveyed by a narrator: a specific person or unspecified literary voice, developed by the creator of the story, to deliver information to the audience, particularly about the plot

A film which uses narration is GoodFellas

Shepard tone

Shepard tone, named after Roger Shepard is a sound consisting of a superposition of sine waves separated by octaves. When played with the bass pitch of the tone moving upwards or downwards, it is referred to as the Shepard scale. This creates the auditory illusion of a tone that seems to continually ascend or descend in pitch, yet which ultimately gets no higher or lower.

Superposition-Superposition is the ability of a quantum system to be in multiple states at the same time until it is measured.

Sine waves-A sine wave or sinusoidal wave is the most natural representation of how many things in nature change state. A sine wave shows how the amplitude of a variable changes with time.

octaves- an interval whose higher note has a sound-wave frequency of vibration twice that of its lower note.

pitch-Pitch is a perceptual property of sounds that allows their ordering on a frequency-related scale, or more commonly, pitch is the quality that makes it possible to judge sounds as “higher” and “lower” in the sense associated with musical melodies.

auditory illusion- are false perceptions of a real sound or outside stimulus. These false perceptions are the equivalent of an optical illusion: the listener hears either sounds which are not present in the stimulus, or sounds that should not be possible given the circumstance on how they were created.

quantum system– a theoretical or actual system based on quantum physics, as a supercomputer.

spectrum of the arts

Performing arts are arts or skills that require a performance in front of a public audience. Examples are acting, singing and dancing.

performing arts- musicals such as West Side Story, Snow White as she sings to the birds

Film as representational art: a preliminary view produce an artistic representation an artist intentionally acts on an artefact according to certain ideas or a „plan‟ in order to causally produce a rendering of some figures, objects, or features in a medium.

representational art- Films that follow a basic story line of it starting out fine then a problem in the middle and it all being resolved by the end. For example Spiderman and other marvel films.

Recording arts is a highly technical and creative field where basic entertainment is just the beginning. It is multidimensional and deals with audio in essentially all its forms and uses

recording arts- films which use sounds to emphasise what is going on in the scene for example a smack uses recording arts to bring the sound of said smack to the ears or the viewers.

A film which “Blurs the Boundaries” is The Wizard Of Oz as it brings in colour from black and white and sounds that haven’t been used yet when the tornado takes Dorothy and her house away.

film soundtracks

The soundtrack for the breakfast club most appeals to me personally due to the change of emotions. For example when the characters have a semimetal moment in the library the background sounds are dimmed and it helps the audience gather a full understanding of what each character is saying. But then also when the characters get along and are enjoying each others company there is a underscore of music which the characters dance along to which brings up the mood. Not only that when there is a tense moment of the students trying to make it back to the library before the head teacher there is another music underscore to emphasise the demand for them to get back and the struggles of running through school when majority of doors are locked.

voice over

voice over is the voice of an unseen narrator speaking (as in a motion picture or television commercial) b : the voice of a visible character (as in a motion picture) expressing unspoken thoughts.

A film which uses voice over, is Sunset Boulevard. This is to understand what the characters inner thoughts are without the character having to say it out loud to people for the audience to then gather an understanding of the emotions and thoughts. Sunset Boulevard also used narration so the audience can grasp the concept of what going on and gather information which some characters cannot.
