how is the ufa still in business?

The purpose of the UFA was to promote Germany during WW1. Due to a financial collapse in the film industry the UFA was about to head into financial ruin when a powerful financier Alfred Hugenberg, a future Hitler supported, brought the place in 1927. He made to company indulge itself into films the promoted German nationalism.

When the Nazis came into power in 1933 films became promotions to the general public about the Nazis also known as Nazification. Without promoting Nazi Germany then the UFA wouldn’t have stayed in business and used tactical ways to continue to produce films during the war era.

Battleship Potemkin

Battleship Potemkin brought Eisenstein’s theories of cinema art to the world in a powerful showcase; his emphasis on montage, his stress of intellectual contact, and his treatment of the mass

Battleship Potemkin is a silent film about the time of the war with Russia. Many sailors on the Battleship Potemkin are outraged when they come to find out that maggots are in the food that they are being served. The sailors start to form a riot in the hopes of getting control so they can be treated better.

All these films are soviet constructivism films as they all have a deeper meaning that the directors have conveyed.

how does the gerasimov institute operate now? – blog task 3

The Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography was also known as the Moscow film school of cinematography.

From 1934 to 1991 the Moscow film school (the oldest film school in the world) operated as an All-Union State Institute of Cinematography. The institute became a university in 2008 and has continued to be a university since.

Now as the school is a university there are many different faculties which have relation to the film industry.

soviet constructivism- blog task 1

During WW1 cinema was used to share war footage and propaganda to those who went to watch and so more people went to the cinema to watch this.

After war less people went to the cinema but film production companies began creating films about the war by 1927 there was at least 15 war films based on WW1. Russian film directors and writers were intrigued by the war which is why majority of the soviet films were mainly based upon war but also was a movement for rejecting stylist concepts which were brought back in the form of film.

the weimar republic

The economic fail in 1929 in Germany was due to the Weimar Republic. German Expressionism became over exaggerated acting used in silent films. German expressionist films became linked to the Weimar Republic. Towards the end of the Weimar Republics period of reign German expressionism was classed as a movement more than an art. Many of the expressionist didn’t like the concept or name of the “movement” created over the art.

dr caligari set ideas

The setting of the cabinet of Dr Caligari is all presented as triangles. For example all doors are triangular, roof are triangular the whole setting is set upon the shape of the triangle.

366. THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI (1920) | 366 Weird Movies

In the set photo you can see how the walkways are triangular along with the doorway presented. Even the shadows on the floor have connotations of a triangle. There fore I’d like to base the set on the concept of a triangle.

Blu-Ray Review: Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari / From Caligari to Hitler – Backseat Mafia

You can see how everything is on a slant and that dead centre the walls create the triangular shape. The floor in the setting isn’t flat and is placed upon an angle therefore with the set design and in shooting id like to ensure that we present the characters and setting as on a slant. The film, as a result, presents us with a dark and twisted world with distorted shapes and angles.

For the setting we intend on using greenscreen with the rebound of using projection in case greenscreen fails us. The background will be hand painted and crafted then created digitally to be placed on greenscreen.
