The VGIK was founded in 1919 by Vladimir Gardin and is the oldest film school in the world.
It was originally called the Moscow Film School but since 1986 the school has been named after Sergei Gerasimov.
In 2008 the institute became a university.
Expressionist art was a movement in the 20th centaury. This art used visual arts, literature, music, architecture and theatre. The main aim of this movement was to express emotional experiences through the form of art rather than physically.
