film soundtracks

The soundtrack for the breakfast club most appeals to me personally due to the change of emotions. For example when the characters have a semimetal moment in the library the background sounds are dimmed and it helps the audience gather a full understanding of what each character is saying. But then also when the characters get along and are enjoying each others company there is a underscore of music which the characters dance along to which brings up the mood. Not only that when there is a tense moment of the students trying to make it back to the library before the head teacher there is another music underscore to emphasise the demand for them to get back and the struggles of running through school when majority of doors are locked.

Leitmotif

Leitmotifs are a short, recurring, musical phrase often used to alongside and idea, concept, place or location. Using these alongside each other makes the audience associate the two of them together. By doing this the film can guide the audience to feeling certain emotions when the music is played.

For example if the main villain has a leitmotif, the audience knows they are nearby whenever the music is played, without even needing to show them on screen yet which can be used to create tension for the audience.

An example of this is in Jaws, whenever he is nearby the audience hears his Leitmotif, warning them of his presence before the characters.

voice over

voice over is the voice of an unseen narrator speaking (as in a motion picture or television commercial) b : the voice of a visible character (as in a motion picture) expressing unspoken thoughts.

A film which uses voice over, is Sunset Boulevard. This is to understand what the characters inner thoughts are without the character having to say it out loud to people for the audience to then gather an understanding of the emotions and thoughts. Sunset Boulevard also used narration so the audience can grasp the concept of what going on and gather information which some characters cannot.
