SCREEN WRITING
CINEMA MOVEMENTS INSPIRATIONS
Now that we have seen all of the class presentations on cinema movements, pick two things (themes and/or techniques) that you have seen from any of the presentations which you’d like to try and incorporate into your next practical film project.
Make sure that you:
reference the specific film movement,
mention the technique or theme you’d like to try and incorporate into your work (alongside a citation of a particular film/director )
include an explanation of why it has inspired you.
DEADLINE FOR POST 1/2/21
one-minute science fiction film
CINEMA MOVEMENTS
“A film movement is a wave of films usually following a particular trend in cinema of the time. Most trending movements in cinema are regional but influence world cinema. These films have cultural origins usually influenced by national tragedy, popular culture, or social issues.
Experimental techniques can be used to create the innovating filming styles. Boundaries in editing are also pushed to the limit at times to give these films a unique identity. These innovating films impact Hollywood and are very important in not only the history but also the future of cinema.”
Source – 18 Important Film Movements Every Movie Buff Should Know by Anthony Crossland (2015)
You will be assigned a particular cinema movement to research and then you’ll present this information to the rest of the group.
You should create an illustrated Blog post which summarises your findings on the assigned movement.
Your post should cover 4 specific things: •Ethos or approach to film making of the Movement •The social/historical/political context of the Movement (dates are really important!) •Examples of Directors Connected with the Movement •Examples of Films Connected with the Movement
Remember to cite the sources of your information by referencing specific websites/books where information was found cf. “academic honesty”.
This work should be complete by Mon 22nd Feb when your work will be presented to the rest of the group.
AUTEUR OR METTEUR?
Auteur is a term used to describe an artist, usually a film director, who applies a highly centralized and subjective control to many aspects of a collaborative creative work; in other words, a person equivalent to an author of a novel or a play
Metteur en scène (literally “scene-setter”) is a phrase that refers to the mise en scène of a particular film director. It suggests that the director has technical competence when it comes to film directing, but does not add personal style to the aesthetic of the film.
Choose a film director who you think matches up the “auteur” criteria set out by Astruc and Bazin in Cahiers Du Cinema (see Powerpoint for more details) and justify your choice using illustrated examples.
Blog Post due on Thus 4th Feb
HINT – Use the Danny Boyle case study on the slides as a structural guide or style model.

CALIGARI PRODUCTION DESIGN TASK
Design a character (including costume, hair and make up) and/or set inspired by the classic German Expressionist film The Cabinet of Dr Caligari (Wiene, 1920).
Explain the character’s backtory and their role in your film and/or the function of the set design for a particular scene.
You can create sketches and photographs of your design and post on the blog to show pre-production work. You should also produce a short screen test (30-40 seconds). Your explanation, photos/sketches should be uploaded to the blog and video should be uploaded to Stream all by the 17th of December.
