Media task
– Good acting
– Interesting plot
– Good soundtrack
– Camera work
– Originality
– Well structured
There are many elements that go into making
a “good“ film. This mostly depends on the viewer’s opinion and the quality and
how well-made the film is. Good actors are essential to making a good film. By
using talented actors directors can correctly portray the roles they wish to.
Films with a highly prestigious cast can also draw in more viewers. Our films
story must also be very well written to help create an interesting plot to entice
the viewer. Good camerawork and editing is also essential to creating a high
quality film. Moving your camera can do so much for not only your film’s
aesthetic, but for its quality of storytelling as well they can make your shots
look cool and increase the aesthetics of your overall piece, but the gears of
several cinematic concepts begin to turn whenever you begin to move your
camera. A film soundtrack is also essential to creating the correct ambience
that bird director intended for the film producers, composers, marketers and
video creators use sound to capture the viewer’s attention, to affect the mood
of the audience, create a sense of anticipation. Originality is also key
without this a film can feel dry and repetitive new interesting stories draw viewers
in from the advertisement stage. Many films are recognised for originality and
trying new methods such as the Blair witch project which was different in the
respect that it was filmed entirely on small hand cams this also dramatically
dropped its production cost, however it is still recognised as a high quality
film. A well-structured story ensures a film keeps a good pacing without
rushing or extending important plot points. This ensures a clear beginning
middle and end.
Principled – In order to adhere to a set of core values and reflect this during creation of work e.g. no sexism, homophobia etc.
Risk-takers – In film, risks are needed to be taken in order to broaden knowledge. E.g. watching and having to analyze films and genres that I would not usually watch.
Knowledgeable – Understanding and being aware of different techniques and different effects when creating a film in order to create a great piece of work.
Balanced – In order to maintain a good time management. Also, in order to balance parts
Communicators – In order to give and receive feedback. Also, to communicate with people we are working with to communicate our ideas.

Caring – In order to respect that other people have different opinions and interests of films. I need to care for the people who may feel they like different things to everybody around them. Also understanding and caring about your audience and the people we work with. Also, we need to care about what we are making.
Thinkers – In order to analyze films and notice things within a film.
Open-minded – In film, I need to be open minded in the different films and genres that we will have to watch. I need to respect other things and not just what I am comfortable and interested in.
Inquirers – In order to ask questions, to make sure that a full understanding is made, and no confusion occurs.
A film being ‘good’ depends on many different factors in my opinion. These include: the amount of suspense induced on the audience; the amount of happiness and fun that the audience experience while watching and the lack of boredom that the audience experiences. For all of these things to occur, many different things need to be ensured by all the creators of the film.
To reduce boredom throughout the film, reinsuring interest, many things need to be considered when creating the film. Changes of speed throughout different scenes and sections of the film will allow for excitement build up and changes of mood. These changes of mood mean that the audience will experience different feelings throughout, meaning the audience stays alert and stuck into the film. Without these changes of speed, the audience will experience a constant mood, which after a while, becomes boring, meaning they will lose focus and interest in the film. Changes in speed of the film is one of the most common techniques in order to ensure interest in the film and I think it is very important in order for a film to be a ‘good’ film. Another, very common technique that allows for interest and prevents boredom within a film is just simply avoiding repetition. Repetition is simply just repeating the same thing in the film. This means the audience will be seeing the same idea over and over, meaning they get the same moods and feelings throughout, which will all create boredom and loss of interest. The lack of boredom and a lot of interest throughout a film, in my opinion, to some extent, means a film is ‘good’.
A great way to keep the scenes fresh and new to the audience, and therefore maintaining an interesting film, is shifting focus. Shifting focus means going from one focus in a film such as on a person and their actions, to another focus, such as another person, in a plane, who is about to become a victim, for example. These shifts in focus maintain an interesting and suspenseful film, because it allows for the audience to see the current situation in the film, but from other angles and views, allowing for a greater picture to be built in their heads.
However, shifts in focus can sometimes be confusing. An example of a confusing shift in focus is if the focus keeps switching from different times in the film. So, to ensure the film is still ‘good’, and not confusing, the changes in focus and theme need to be understandable, otherwise the audience will get confused and therefore switch off from the film.
Changes in location is a great way to freshen the eyes of the audience, maintaining their interest. However, these changes in location can be confusing if it is not shown that the location has been changed. So, to ensure an understandable shift in location, the film should include something like a landscape shot of the city or place that the location has changed to, or something like a little text, saying, for example, ‘Manhattan, New York’. These changes in location keep the audience interested, as they are seeing something new, or at least something they haven’t seen since earlier in the film.
A way to make a film good, is to keep it exciting and fun. Fast paced scenes are a great way to create excitement in the audience. These scenes, when accompanied with suiting music, like fast rock music, create a great amount of excitement and fun, making the film interesting and easy to watch, which is what a ‘good’ film should always be. Speaking of sounds, sound design is a great way to create different feelings in a film. For example, panning, where the sounds are put in either the left of right ear of the audience and are moved around. This creates a realistic feeling, as if the audience are actually in the film, creating an intriguing effect, making the audience want to watch more.
In order to create suspense in a film, moments of silence can be used, during an intense scene. For example, if a character is in a haunted house, and they are going down into the basement, if all music stops, the audience are forced to just watch what is going on in the screen, making it extremely intense. This creates a great effect and makes the film intense and interesting.
Overall, a film is made good, if it is kept interesting, understandable, exciting and suspenseful, using many different techniques.

We enjoy many films
but what makes a film stand out so much that we class it as a good film. There
are many elements needed to make a good film. The element that everybody says
is the most important thing is a good storyline this is because you’re not going
to watch anything that bores you. There are multiple cases where a good
storyline has been called a bad movie due to the other elements being executed
poorly however not often or never do you hear a bad storyline being called a
good movie even if all the other key elements are perfect.
Other than storyline,
another element that needs to be completed to its highest standard is audio.
This is because people will watch a video that doesn’t have the best resolution
or video quality if the audio is crisp and clear, however, they will not watch
a video that looks amazing but has poor audio as they won’t be able to
understand the dialogue. Also, on the timeline of an editing software often the
video and audio are separated and take up the same amount of room on the
timeline; this could be why filmmakers often refer to audio as 50% of the
video.
Thirdly, an
element that is often overlooked is the pacing of the film. Poor pacing will
either confuse or bore the audience as fast pacing will often lead to the
viewer trying to think and catch up to the speed of the video. This can also go
the other way when a film is too slow so the audience gets bored and lose focus
which may make them miss a critical scene.
One small issue that
can sometimes occur in a film or series that instantly makes me think it was
poorly produced is any continuity errors. These will be overlooked or
un-noticed by most however I seem to always seem them. They can be as small as
someone from behind the camera leaving something on set when changing scenes,
this happened in a Game of Thrones episode when someone left a Starbucks coffee
on a rock, or it can be as big as a complete change of outfit in the next scene
without logical reason for it.
“The King and Chick
are rounding turn four” *. Memorable scenes or quotes as these make you think
about the film and sometimes even get you watching the film again. This is a
way a movie can be seen as good. It is like the music from Rocky when he is
training because whenever you hear it playing everyone says that it is the
Rocky theme tune. This can either be created in camera or during editing.
Finally, for me a
film is made a good film when in conversation we still refer to it as a good
film over 10 years after it had been released; as you can see in my all-time
favourites list very few of the films are less than 10 years old, in fact quite
a few of them are not even from this century. This shows these films have
lasted overtime and for me that is what makes a film a good film.
*A quote from Cars
where Lighting McQueen’s rear tyres have blown up and he is almost at the
finish line and his rivals, The King and Chick Hicks, are taking the last turn
on the final lap. This scene is about 10 minutes into the film.

The formula
for a successful films
Films in the box office in 2018 are often follow ups to a
previous movie as they have a fan base already so consumers want to go see what
happened after the previous movie. A lot of them are fantasy/action films as
these are the most unlike real life and viewers want to escape the real world
when watching movies. Finally a lot of the movies are aimed at children as the
cinemas want kids to come and watch the movies as they are the ones that buy
popcorn etc. and that is where a cinema makes its money.
