What Makes a “Good” Film?

A good film has many variables and factors included for success and greatness. First of all, there must be a good team and structure behind the scenes that is organised and capable of delivering what the directors need so the script remains full proof with drama and entertainment to keep the viewers intrigued, and interested throughout the film. The team must work together efficiently, and must remain co-ordinated.

The cast of actors must be entertaining and play the character to the vision of the director and leave no corners unturned, with no shortcuts taken as it is something that can’t be rushed.

For a film to be memorable, there must be something truly unique and original. A few examples are lightsabers from Star Wars, or the Minions from “Despicable Me”. Another way of making films memorable is the soundtrack. Making a special theme tune can be hard to accomplish but it is key to a “good” film.

The viewers must also be attached to a protagonist and would like to feel a sense of good vs evil, as well as something relatable in some shape or form like a similar experience or emotion.

The film must have a purpose, quest or mission to complete in order for their to be a purpose in the film or saga, as well as context and clues to a characters past for mystery and suspense. If certain points aren’t achieved the film could become boring and not be classified as a “good” film.

In different genres of film, different types of endings and clichés are expected. For example, action films expect a quality fight between the antagonist and protagonist. In Romance, the chosen couple are predicted to fall in love and live happily ever after. So a plot twist like in “Avengers Infinity war” when the antagonist prevailed would create drama tension shock and horror leading to theories and attention that could possibly happen.

A film is also considered “good” if anyone involved in the film is awarded an award such as an Oscar, or a BFTA which praise is naturally given which could persuade people to buy the film to watch it, if people haven’t seen it before meaning award ceremonies can be considered as a platform for advertising. Continuing the theme of advertising films, creating a high quality trailer to draw in viewers is your first opportunity to present a “good” film.

Pre AS Summer task: My All-Time Favourites

Best Picture : My all time favourite picture is Avatar. Avatar revolutionised 3D viewing in cinema for the audience with innovative technology. Avatar was written in 1994, but the technology needed to make the film wasn’t advanced enough, so the director James Cameron waited until 2009 when the film was released as the technology was adequate enough. Cameron waited so his vision fictional world was perfect. The design of “Pandora” was more realistic and to a much higher quality to capture the full potential of its lush colourful habitats and wildlife because of his patience.

Best Director: Continuing the theme of Avatar, I nominate James Cameron because of his sheer maturity to wait on such a huge project to make the first film of the franchise to a higher level, with much improved technology is very brave and bold. He has also directed on the “Terminator” and “Titanic”, which are very credible films that will remain remembered in the filmmaking community.

Best Actor: In my opinion the best actor is Samuel L. Jackson, for his ability to change his character and personality. In particular, his performance in “Kingsman: The Secret Service” as his character as “Richmond Valentine” as he personifies the villain with a strong and sympathetic background being bullied as a child. Jackson adapts his voice to have a strong lisp, to bring more character to the villian who aims to control the minds of the whole world with his sidekick “Gazelle”, who has scissor legs which cuts through flesh clean producing as little blood as possible as her master’s greatness weakness is blood. Jackson also plays the Character “Nick Fury”, who is a character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fury is a well known secret service agent for “S.H.I.E.L.D”, and is described to be the “coolest guy in the room” with his eye patch and his strong deep voice. These two examples shows off Jackson’s talent at acting two different personas with different voices and skills which show off his talent.

Best Actress: My favourite actress goes to Jenifer Lawrence, especially for her performance playing the protagonist in “The Hunger Games” as she fights against the other district in the annual games against the other districts. Her district (District 12) lives in the most poverty as their purpose is to mine for coal and minerals so they aren’t trained to fight like district 1 and 2. However Lawrence’s Character “Catniss Everdeen” has a secret talent in Archery which she uses to prevail and survive in the games with a mighty underdog story.

Best Soundtrack: Without a doubt the best soundtrack in the film industry was made for “Interstellar” and composed by Hans Zimmer. The theme tune for the movie has a slow build up, which builds up to a climax and main event that can motivate you as a human, and at the same time calm you down and tell a story in your mind if you close your eyes and use your imagination. This piece can be performed solo on a Piano, or in a Symphony Orchestra.

Q: Was this list easy to complete and why?

This list wasn’t easy to complete because of the amount of options to choose from, and I found it hard to credit one specific person for their amazing work.

Q: Why are the Oscars so important to the film industry?

The Oscars are important to the film industry as directors and actors are  appreciated and rewarded for their success and talent at creating films as well as performing in them.

Best Original Screenplay: Best original screenplay goes to “Kingsmen: The secret service”, for the fight scene in the Church when “Harry Hart” takes on a rampant crowd of worshipers who are being controlled by “Valentine”. This scene is designed to look like one take as “Harry” picks off one victim at a time, with smooth transitions and unique kills. In addition there is a perfect soundtrack in the background with a mighty guitar solo. This style of fast pace fighting has never been seen before which is why it is original.

Best Editing: Best editing goes to “Final Destination”, because of the films title credits as it shows past deaths in the franchise but in a style of X-ray photographs of bones crunching and breaking from famous deaths. Right at the end of the film, the protagonists are killed by a rogue truck as the credits roll in from colour to black and white imagery, as we see the extent of the damage caused to the protagonist’s body.

Best Cinematography: I award best cinematography to “Star Wars: A New Hope”, because of the double Sun set on the desert planet of “Tatooine” as the powerful theme tune blasts full volume in a powerful manner creating a great sense of nostalgia which makes up George Lucas’ favourite scene in the whole Saga.

Best Sound Design: Without a doubt the best sound design has to go to “Baby Driver”, as the entire scene is perfectly timed to the music (The Jon Spencer Blues explosion- Bellbottoms). For example, when the three bank robbers slam the car boot there is a thud at the exact same time as in the song. The tone of the song also showcases the mood and pace in the film.

Best Production Design: The best production designer goes to Charles Woods, who worked on “Avengers Endgame”. What he did that was so special was make five versions of the film so then the actors couldn’t leak any information on such a high profile movie keeping all spoilers a secret until the release of the movie keeping all the secrets classified.

Q: What do these movie production movies entail?

These production movies entail that a lot of hard work and dedication is put into movies to create a high quality piece of work, with huge budgets, and work forces for our entertainment.
