Activity 3 – Formula for a successful film

What Does This List Tell Us About the “formula” For Making A Successful Film?

The majority of the films on the list above are recreations of older films with the use of modern technology instead. If the older film was successful and enjoyed by the audience then the new modernized film should have the same attention or increased attention, this is because all of these films are mainstream and so they are advertised by the media especially on the TV creating a window for success because of the want to watch the film. This creates a successful film because mainstream films targets all age groups and appeals to all genders therefore it can be enjoyed by everyone. Specifically, the use of targeting all ages can aid a film in being successful because it wont block out specific groups of people for example if younger kids want to go and watch a movie, parents will have to go as well, but the adults will still be able to enjoy the film as much as the kids do. Using or recreating an old film can create excitement for audiences who have watched the previous films and then want to find out more in the next film or want to know how the movie has been directed to show a more modernized view on the story line. Social media can be used to review films and for people to express their feeling which can make others want to then watch the film for themselves and see how thy feel about it.

Activity 2 – Film Categories

What Do These Decisions Tell Us About How Film Is (De) Valued as Within Society?

These decisions tell us that mainstream films are the most popular type of films as they can be viewed by any gender and any age, whereas films in the Art Film and Historically Significant Film categories will have specific target audiences, therefore will not be seen by as many people.

Mise – En – Scene – Cindy Sherman

CINDY SHERMAN :

Cindy Sherman was born January 19, 1954 and is an American artist who predominantly photographs herself. Her photographs usually depict herself in many different scenery and clothes. She tries to create completely different contexts all in her studio, showing an emphasis on the impact of mise-en scene. Her images all look completely different based on the makeup and clothes she is wearing, the background and the expression she is portraying before the camera.

MISE-EN SCENE:

noun
1. the arrangement of the scenery, props, etc. on the stage of a theatrical production or on the set of a film.

Mise-en Scene is crucial to the final composition of a photo or a film. It helps to set the mood and can completely change the feel of what the viewer is seeing. The mise-en scene is a combination of different aspects that make up the scene. It includes, costumes, hair and makeup, space, composition, set design, film stock, aspect ratio and lighting. For example the if the set design, costumes and hair and makeup all match and fit well together then it gives the film more verisimilitude and helps to immerse the audience.

Thoughts –

We only managed to complete 1 character because we were too focused on the camerawork. We need to focus more on Mise-en-Scene next time.

What Makes a Film “Good”?

A ‘good’ film would use specific techniques and different themes to draw the audience in. However, these techniques would need to be used at the right time in order to create that smooth flowing story line. If a technique is used too often it can become repetitive in which case the audience would be bored and not want to know what happens next, which is a key point in films.

One key factor of a film is to make sure repetition is avoided, this allows for the film to become more exciting and easier to watch as there is a constant change in video or theme. If there is more repetition in a film the audience can become bored. Furthermore, if a film uses smooth and understandable changes in theme it will allow the story to flow a lot easier and will create a more entertaining story for the audience to follow. Without using a smooth and understandable theme the audience can become confused and the story line might not make sense.

In my opinion a ‘good’ film would use changes in speed to create more tension and suspense which make the audience want to continue watching. Throughout a film the backgrounds and sounds used will change depending on the theme so it can create a more detailed story line as these backgrounds and sound could be used to show further meaning of the situation. However, if a film used too little background detail, I think that it could cause the audience to become bored as the scene could follow on for a couple of minutes. A ‘good’ film would need to constantly capture the audience’s attention, to do this they could use a change in scenery or use a plot twist to confuse the audience or to make the audience want to know what’s going to happen next. Personally, in a ‘good’ film I would want a lot of suspense in a film because this would cause a lot of confusion, this confusion could easily be brought up by creating a story line that the audience would easily be able to understand and then bring it to a plot twist to change the audiences view and to form a new road to follow for the rest of the film.

Why are the Oscars so important to the film industry?

The Oscars are important because it can allow the actors to become recognised by other production companies so their career can be more successful. There is also a chance that once the film has won an Oscar it can become more popular overall as people would want to see why they won the Oscar.

What do movie production roles entail?

Movie productions roles entail the specific groups of the creation progress of a film. A director would control all of the actors and the lighting for example, and the script writers would create the scripts for the actors to follow and for the lighting team to follow. All together the production needs all of these groups in order to make the entire film and each role has a very important part to focus on that will bring the whole film together. Best Soundtrack: This Is Me – (The Greatest Show)
