Dr Caligari character inspiration

This is a detective type character that I drew on procreate. I wanted his most prominent features to be his nose and eyebrows to give a contrasting look to the face. I added a hat as a lot of the other characters all had hats on with some hair coming out from beneath it.
WHY WAS THE CABINET OF DR CALIGARI’S USE OF MISE EN SCENE, CINEMATOGRAPHY AND EDITING SO INNOVATIVE?
One most noticeable mise en scene from The Cabinet Of Dr Caligari was the shapes and sizes of the doors and windows. One thing to note about some the set was that it was painted with colors that would fully show when in black white. This abstract look of the doors and windows actually allows the viewer to pay more attention to the set.

Another noticeable mise on scene was the low key lighting. Low key lighting creates a highlighting effect on each scene on the film so that even though some focus may be on the set in the background, the lighting can move your focus onto what they want you to see.

The Cabinet Of Dr Caligari was filmed using 6 film roles so each role had a time whilst being switched for the audience to take a break and reflect on what they’d seen.
FavoRite scene from citizen kane
My favorite scene from Citizen Kane was the How to Run a Newspaper scene.
At the beginning of the scene you can see Mr thatcher in the “foreground” of the scene closest to the camera so that only his back is showing, with the camera filming a behind the shoulder shot, with Charles Foster Kane sitting down looking very relaxed. This shot is usually used to emphasize power over another person, Mr thatcher is supposed to be showing power over Charles as he is stood up looking over him talking about the newspaper and making sure he understands what has happened but Charles stays looking relaxed and calm.
At about 13 seconds in to the YouTube video above you can see Mr Bernstein move into the shot from behind Charles and joins the conversation next to him, however you can see that Mr thatcher is still talking when Charles changes focus onto Mr Bernstein conveying that Charles isn’t focusing on what Mr thatcher is saying fully showing Charles’ personality.
Moving on to about 56 seconds into the YouTube scene above you, see Mr Thatcher take a seat about 1 meter away from Charles to move back down to his level and maintain a more focused level of communication with him where they proceed to talk about the newspaper and ways to improve it. Charles still keeps his same relaxed mood with a cigar in his mouth however has in fact moved his attention completely to Mr Thatcher, fully re-engaging in their current conversation with no distractions.
Slightly further on in the scene above, Charles and Mr thatcher both stand up and both change their tone towards the conversation, a small argument occurs when Charles changes his tone and creates a more empowering voice in which he stands taller than Mr Thatcher, almost regaining ground over him and making him feel smaller in contrast to the beginning of the scene. However as the scene ends Charles tone calms down and goes back to a his usual relaxed personality.
The reason I particularly liked this scene was because Charles personality was strongly shown through it. He stayed his relaxed self while having a cigar in his mouth but started to become more aggravated the more the conversation turned to him. When he and Mr Thatcher stand up you fully see Charles standing his ground and almost towering over Charles to put him in his place for a second, but after he returns back to his relaxed mood.
Kane project overview
When filming our backlit scene we thought that everything would look perfect as from what we could see it was. Once we had taken it back to the classroom and uploaded it into premiere pro we noticed some things that definitely needed to be changed.
The first thing we noticed is that the backlight wasn’t creating a harsh enough shadow on Ebony so to enhance the shadow we moved the lighting round until it was perfect.
The second thing we noticed was that when Torin slammed his hand down on the table it was done too fast and didn’t quite fit with the small amount of dialogue that we had, so when re-filming we just timed this motion at a more suitable time.
I thought that the final result after the second shoot that we did was exactly what we envisioned and that it portrayed exactly what we wanted it to.
Film making intentions – citiZen kane
Shooting Plan:
What technique did we use – Chiarascuro Lighting and Backlit Subjects.
Where We Are Shooting – In the media studio.
Who We Are Shooting – We are shooting Torin’s hand and Ebony’s document.
What Specific Meaning We Are Trying To Achieve In Relation To Storytelling – we tried to portray a secret document being handed between two anonymous characters. We used the backlit lighting to make harsh shadows and outline of Ebony to show her as a main character.
