WEEK BEGINNING 27TH aPRIL: FOCUS ON AUTEUR THEORY

T

Entire Editorial Masthead of Cahiers du Cinéma Quits to Protest ...

Well done to all of you who have submitted your Comparative Study research question proposals!

If you haven’t done so already then this has to be your priority this week. I’ll be getting back to those who have submitted initial ideas in the next couple of days on how to modify and improve your research questions so that they meet IB’s criteria for this assessment. If you’ve  already had this feedback from me then you should be able to get going on the research (inquiry) phase of the task.

This week, the thematic focus is on Auteur Theory which is a really important concept attached to studying film at this level. I’ve emailed you the teaching PowerPoint slides which explain the details on how to complete the Auteur Presentation research task homework for this week.

Remember, that most of my slides contain hyperlinks to YouTube videos which will explain concepts further and show you examples from films to help you understand them.

Before you start the Auteur Presentation  research task (due in this Friday 1St May ), I advise that you read through the slides and watch the video on Auteur Theory at the start. Danny Boyle is one of my favourite directors and I’ve hyperlinked examples of his trademark style all the way through the presentation for you to watch.

If you’re unsure whether the director that you want to look at would be a good choice for this task then don’t hesitate to e mail me for feedback first.

IB Film Lessons Week Beginning 20th April: French New Wave and Comparative Assessment

This week, the primary focus needs to be on getting your Comparative Research Question uploaded to your blog.
You should also read through the slides on French New Wave and watch the YouTube Videos. The Breathless task could be undertaken as a research task without watching the whole film.
By the end of this week you should have:
1)Uploaded your research question for your Comparative Study (which identifies your film theory focus and the two films that you intend to use) to your blog
2)Read through and watched the French New Wave lesson and completed the “Breathless” task which should be sent straight to Ms Magowan via e mail.

EISENSTEIN MONTAGE TASK

Plan, shoot and edit a 20-30 second sequence focusing on at least 2 of Eisenstein’s 4 key methods of montage – metric, rhythmic, tonal and intellectual.

  • Plan (film makers intentions) write a basic outline of what happens in the sequence and then storyboard into at least 10 shots.
  • Shoot (working in pairs) film the shots for the scenes in locations around school.
  • Edit use Premiere to cut the shots together in accordance with at least two of Eisenstein’s methods mentioned above.

DEADLINE : FRIDAY 20th March

NOTE: While you can use the same or similar footage as your partner, each student should have their own unique version of the edit.

CITIZEN KANE GROUP TASK DETAILS

Your task is to create a shot (single set up ) which is inspired by one of the cinematographic techniques (from the list below) used by Toland/Welles on Citizen Kane:

Back-lit Subjects

Chiaroscuro lighting

Deep Focus

Framed Subjects

Impossible Tracks

Light Spill

Extreme High and Low Angle Shots

RULES:

There must be at least one subject (character) on screen.

You don’t need to use dialogue from Citizen Kane and can write a piece of your own or not use any!

You can choose to shoot indoors or outdoors but remember that outdoor shooting is MUCH harder to control aesthetically.

Your finished piece (basically one shot) should be no longer than 30 seconds in length and no shorter than 8 seconds.

Note: you can edit in Premiere ( grading, top and tail, stripping out audio etc) but there should only be one shot and not a series of shots in your finished piece. You may be able to use this piece for your individual film role portfolio if you think that it is appropriate.

Before you start shooting should you should be able to tell me:

Which technique(s) you are using (from the list above)

Where (location) you are shooting

Who (subject) you are shooting

What specific meaning you are trying to achieve in relation to storytelling

Create a post outlining “film makers intentions” which addresses the 4 areas above. Then export your finished piece to your M drive folder labeling it “Kane Task”, creating a link to it on your blog . Finally, create a short reflective post explaining what went well and what you’d do differently next time on your blog.

DEADLINE (for all posts and upload) – WED 26TH FEB

To Do (wEDNESDAY)

  1. Finish meta cognition entry- type(s) ? Do you think this is accurate? What skills do you need to develop?
  2. Allocate roles for group presentation
  3. Begin “investigation” research phase of presentation
  4. Make sure that you cite sources used in your presentation e.g. books and websites in your notes page or on a separate slide as this is part of IB’s policy on academic honesty.
