Activity 2

Dances with wolves

This film presents the themes of Kipling’s poem ‘White Man’s Burden’ through the white American’s views of the Nativie American way of life. However the main concept of this film juxtaposes these themes by showing a white American embracing the culture and life style of the Native Americans. The white Americans do not understand why the main characters embraces their life style and maintain trying to infroce their culters and way of life on everyone. This eventually leads to the colonisation of the native americans.

DW Grithiths

Birth of a Nation was so successful as it was the longest film of its time running at around 3 hours. It had a high production value and a large cast. The length of this film allowed the audience to experience the plot in further detail. It’s plot and the theme of the movie appealed to people in the 1915’s and supported racist stereotypes during this time.

This film is highly controversial in the present day as it shows the KKK as heros and is extremely racists. It had almost every negative stereotype of black people there is in one movie.

Buster Keaton

Keaton was a slapstick film director and actor. He wrote, produced and performed all his own work and did his own stunts. For example the classic film ‘Steamboat Bill, Jr’ shows Keaton doing very dangerous stunts like the house falling on top of him. He also produced ‘The General’ which showed a train crashing into a river off of a bridge. This stunt amazed people and the wreckage of the train remained at the sight of shooting for years. Keaton ended up becoming an alcoholic and living in a car park out side the studio where he used to work, his work is highly recognised in the present day but during his time he was less acknowledged.

Charlie Chaplin

Chaplin used physical acting to create short comical sketches. He created a film called ‘The Kid’ in 1921 about a boy he adopts. This boy goes around smashing windows so that Chaplin can come in and fix them for a fee. Chaplin’s physical comedy and very personal style of film making made him a great cinema practitioner. even though Chaplin was still making films when sound and colour had been brought into play, he remained with classic black and white silent film style that he had previously worked with.
