Macro element – Character and Narrative

What was the name of the first film made by the Lumiere Brothers and when was this?

June 6, 1948, Bandol) created the film La Sortie des ouvriers de l’usine Lumière (1895; “Workers Leaving the Lumière Factory”), which is considered the first motion picture.

What is the ‘Phantom Ride’?

Phantom rides or panoramas were an early genre of film popular in Britain and the US at the end of the 19th century. Pre-dating true narrative, the films simply show the progress of a vehicle moving forwards, usually shot by strapping a cameraman to the front.

What was ground-breaking about the silent films ‘The sick Kitten’ and ‘Life of an American Fireman’?

‘The sick Kitten’ had the first close-up and camera angle change, ‘Life of an American Fireman’ is the first film to use cross cutting (cutting between two locations).

What was the name of the first ‘film star’ in Hollywood?

Florence Lawrence

Screen play

The script I chose with Lawrence is a scene out the film ‘FULL METAL JACKET’ which includes the mental breakdown of Leonard aka. Sargent Pile in a bathroom. A character called ‘Joker’ finds him and tries to tell him that their drill Sargent will not be happy if he finds them in the bathroom at the given time (appears to be night). We had another option of the film ‘BRONSON’ but felt that would be impractical and difficult to do.

We chose this part of the script as it has compelling lines and it is the climax of the film as it follows with Leonard shooting his drill Sargent and himself afterwards. Our script does not contain that part of the scene as we came to the conclusion it would be too difficult to portray that in the time given for the task. Another reason why we chose this part of the script is because the lines were short so the actors different have to memorize lots of long lines. We fed the lines to the actor within takes which was quicker and more efficient.

SHOOT

We made the creative decision to not shoot the scene in a bathroom as we thought it would be very unpractical as, differently to the film set we don’t have a open bathroom in our school, we have cubicles which would have made it more difficult to capture some of the shots. Also due to the fact that there might have been people who needed the toilet interrupting us while we were shooting. Instead I came up with the solution to use the Drama changing rooms, which were empty and more practical to use.

For lighting we used 3 mobile phones placed on the floor in specific areas that suited the type of eerie tone in the scene.

To improve the scene I could of done with different angles of shots for example an over the shoulder shot. This addition of shot would give the audience a sense of place of context and time. Both aren’t ever in the same shot which gives question to whether they might not be talking to each other.

Advantages:

  • The changing rooms were more practical to use
  • Lighting was effectively used and easy to maneuver in and out of the room.
  • The script suited the amount of actors we had available
  • The script was short so shooting didn’t take a long time
  • We had a lot of time on post-production and editing

Disadvantages:

  • The separate shots of the two characters were shot at different times which affected the continuity and flow of the scene.
  • Both characters are never seen in the same shot which affects the context and continuity for the audience.
  • The use of a bathroom set wasn’t available
  • Audio wasn’t good quality as we lacked the resource of a mic or boom

FINAL EDIT

In our edit we shot the two characters scenes in two different blocks and edited them together to make the scene. We did a shot reverse shot of the two characters.

I attempted to make the scene flow better through J and L cuts and to help the context and continuity for the audience but the audio wasn’t the best so it couldn’t give the affect I had attempted.

Voice Over

Voice-over (also known as off-camera or off-stage commentary) is a production technique where a voice—that is not part of the narrative (non-diegetic)—is used in a radio, television production, filmmaking, theatre, or other presentations.

Example Film with a narration:

Bronson – Charles Bronson (Main character) talks about what he thinks and his experiences.

Sound motifs

A sound effect or combination of sound effects that are associated with a particular character, setting, situation or idea through the film. The sound motifs condition the audience emotionally for the intervention, arrival, or actions of a particular character.

An example of this would be:

Jaws theme, whenever the sense of Jaws is around. This is done to create suspense and creates the presence of the shark.
