Shot Angles & Sizes

This birds eye view puts the viewer in the position of the antagonist (King Kong.) This shot type helps portray to the audience the vulnerability of Jessica Lang’s character.

This XLS (Extra Long Shot) from King Kong 1976 powerfully conveys the power dynamic through the size of both the characters. King Kong is placed in the center of the shot to allow the audience to focus on him and anticipate what he is going to do next

This birds eye shot is used to show the audience the crows in the sky. The fact that the ‘Antichrist’ is kept in the shot implies to the audience he is the cause of the ominous weather. This low shot also gives the audience a sense of intimidation.

Cinematography

Cinematography: the art of photography and camerawork in film-making.

Cinematographer: a person who oversees or directs photography and camerawork in film-making, especially one who operates the camera.

A cinematographer is the head of photography and is in charge of the lighting and camera crew. The cinematographer is required to work on the more technical aspects meanwhile the directors purpose is for the performance to be portrayed as intended. However, it is vital for both the cinematographer and the director to work closely together.

My Blade runner rating.

The element which we were focusing on for this Film was MISE-EN-SCENE.

My Rating: 5/10

Memorable Scene: The scene with the
‘exotic dancer’ getting
shot was a highlight.
The slow motion affect
used made the scene
intense. Also, the
gunshots and the
shattering of the glass
made for an action
packed scene resulting
in a death.

IB Profile & Categorizing Films

The 10 IB Qualities Needed For Film

Risk-taking; This quality relates to film studies since there are many risks involved when choosing the genre. For example, if directors want to challenge and be a pioneer in the industry then they must take risks.

Reflective; This is a key attribute to have within film as it is the only way you can improve.

Open Minded; You need to be open minded so that you can explore possibly better options and don’t limit yourself.

Caring; You are constantly working with people within film which means you must take into consideration their views and feelings and whether they are comfortable with the role they have.

Principled; Having a set of core values which inform of whatever we produce. Knowledgeable; The more accurate the context and background of the storyline the better the move will be received.

Balanced; Organizing time and balancing the 4 micro elements.

Art Film- The Shape Of Water, The Wizard Of Oz, The breakfast club

Mainstream Film- A Bugs Life,Toy Story, Dead pool 2.

Historically Significant Film- Love Simon, Once upon a time in the West, The Seventh Samurai.

It is difficult for these films to be put into only one category. This is because films usually fit into multiple categories not just one. For example, though a film may of been created as a mainstream film they eventually may fall into other categories such as an ‘art film.

“Blurred The Lines”

Give an Example of a Recent Film which “blurs the boundaries” and Explain how it does this?

A piece of work which blurs the boundaries is Until Dawn. It is an interactive drama game which acts like a movie but you the viewer have to make each decision to decide the fate of the characters.. Larry Fessenden and Graham Reznick wrote it intending to create a video game equivalent of a slasher film. The technology used to create Until Dawn is remarkable. In order to get the pictures and scenes that they do, Sony captured a 3D facial scan of the actors. They then would film the facial and voice capture both at the same time before overlaying it onto the facial scan. In order for the movement of the actors to be presented in game exactly how it was in reality, Sony had to use reflective beam suits and an infrared camera system to make the CG bone movement seem more believable. This interactive way of art is a clear example of a piece of work which has blurred the lines both through its technology and style

Verisimilitude

The term Verisimilitude means something realistic which immerses the viewer.

An example of a film which has verisimilitude is Call Me By Your Name. Although it is not a prime example compared to something such as “The Hunger Games Mocking jay part 2.’  It is a romantic drama based in the 1980s.  The fact that it is filmed in Italy with beautiful landscapes and little camera crew helps to make the scenes and film as a whole more believable. Furthermore, the constant use of the Italian language over English makes the film and setting more believable. This movie has great verisimilitude as all the costumes and props match exactly with the 80s style. For example, the constant use of cigarettes and bicycles which perfectly match the life style of Italy in the 80s.
