What makes a film a “good” film?
There are certain characteristics which make a film a “good” film. Whether the film has won many awards, gotten great reviews or critical acclaim, but there are also different elements other than good praise which that the film is good. Firstly editing in film is very important; it helps putting all the shots together into the right sequence so the film comes out as whole unit, which can either make or break a film. Editing gives the perfect flow to the film, where the film editor is responsible to arrange the shots in an organized and smooth manner. It also helps with the switching of scenes as the transitions have to be placed at the right moments to attain the proper flow and this also goes for cutting the scenes which is key for the correct pace of the film. Another element of what makes a good film is the sound editing which involves altering the volume levels and matching the video clips with the audio tracks. This is important because it should invoke emotions from the audience, and dubbing plays an important role in this too as it eliminates any unwanted and unnecessary sounds.
The element of cinematography is an important part of the film because cinematographers are the ones who decide which camera and lighting effects should be used in that film. They use filters to add more of a dramatic effect for a specific scene in a movie, and the lens that the cinematographer choose has a great impact on the look, feel and effect of the film as choosing the wrong or right lens could change the movie completely. Lighting is also very important because the it contributes to the right images and when its right in gives out the true emotions that producers and directors want. What else that contributes to the satisfaction of the audience is the movement of the camera which makes engages the viewers by putting them into the perspective of the camera.
The Mise-en-Scene is a French expression meaning “placing on stage” and is the physical arrangement of everything as it appears in the film (actors, decoration, props, lighting, costumes etc.)and it effects everything from how the film looks to how the film feels.
First of all, the setting which can have a huge impact on visual
storytelling in the film. For example, if you set a scene in a
bedroom, it provides us with ideas about who the character is and
who they are as a person. The décor of the film can also be read as
an expression of it can have a deeper meaning. For instance, colours
and lighting can show if something is moody, cold, dramatic,
romantic or melancholy and the fabrics or the objects can imply
someone’s status in life, if they’re wealthy or living in poverty.
This also goes for costumes, as they can show the characters
personality and their role and journey throughout the film.
