MCU

This shot is used in the film, “Do the Right Thing” when the character Radio Raheem is explaining the meaning behind his jewellery which is labelled, ‘love’ and ‘hate’. This has an effect on the audience as we’re engaged more into his story because he is the focal point.

Diegesis

Diegetic: The perspective or “gaze” is expressed in terms of how the audience is being asked to look at the content or subjects on screen by the director

e.g. Django Unchained, Good Will Hunting, Trainspotting.

Intra-deiegetic: This is when the audience are put in the place of a character and being asked to see things from their viewpoint through the use of subjective camerawork

e.g. Cloverfield, Blair Witch Project, Wolfenstien series (FPS).

Extra-diegetic: This is when someone on screen addresses the audience directly by looking directly down the lens of the camera– sometimes known as “breaking the 4th wall”. Not to be confused with the above when the audience are being asked to the “perspective” of another character

e.g. The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Wolf of Wall Street, Fight Club

Mise-en-scène analysis – Good Will Hunting

good will hunting favorite scene ben affleck

Set design- In this shot, Will Hunting rides a train from MIT, where he works as a janitor, back home to south Boston. The absolute emptiness of the train carriage in this scene links to him being lost and disengaged in his life.

Film Stock- This shot is incredibly vibrant and saturated with the contrast of the night sky in the background, the glossy red seats and the outfit the character is wearing, which embraces the idea that the environment itself is living and implies that Will has a bright future ahead of him.

Composition- As Will is the focal point if this shot not only because of how hes in the middle of the train carriage, but because of the way he is positioned- he’s in a position associated with contemplation and thought and shows us that he is in a state of confusion of what he wants to do do in his life.

MISE EN SCENE

Mise-en-scène is a phrase used to describe the design aspect of a film production, which literally means “what is in the screen”.

Cindy Sherman was born on January 19, 1954 and is an American photographer who is know for her self-portraits, in which she represents herself in many different forms and as various imagined characters.

Cindy Sherman makes all her photos different even though they are all self-portraits. She does this by using mise en scene; this is where she changes the background, her costume, her expression or her make up to change the mood. Also, all her photos are staged.

Her most known work is a collection of self portraits where she changed something before taking another photo. During this she went from a librarian to a prostitute.

Below is our plan and attempts at using mise en scene in photos.

How To Read A Film

Performance arts:  Things that happen in real time; an example of Performance arts would be ‘The Lion King’ as the actors are performing songs and are dancing at the same time.

The Representational Arts:   This is when established codes and the conventions of language are used to show information to the audience, both pictorial and literary. An example of Representational Arts art in an art gallery.

The Recording Arts:  This provides a more direct path between the subject and the observer: media not without their codes but qualitatively more direct than the media of the representational arts. An example of recording arts is music you can stream or even a film on Netflix.

A film that “blurs the boundaries” is Black Panther (2018) because of how it uses CGI and greenscreen techniques to convey and different reality to ours, as well as still using verisimilitude to make the film have a sense of truthfulness and authenticity to it, but puts a twist on it.

What does this tell us about making the “formula” for making a successful film?

There are a few things to consider here; firstly, there is a trend of having franchises as huge box office films because people have grown an attachment to the actors and these films have developed a fanbase, so seeing a sequel with actors that made these films popular will generate a large amount of revenue. Secondly are the genres which make these films successful. For example, most of these films on the list are comedic, action-based and full of fantasy related themes. What draws people to this films are that that the films have a lack of reality to them which people aren’t used to ( other-worldly settings, fictional props and characters with superhuman feats and powers etc.), and these genres of film are used as a form of escapism for the audience, as a result movies with these genres make people feel more immersed.
