What makes a good film?

Overall, I think that a movie with a good soundtrack, and a compelling cast of characters is what makes a good movie. At the beginning of Shrek, we are introduced to ‘Shrek’ played by mike Myers. His accent and the way he used it to convey Shrek’s emotions really make for a strong start to a movie. The plot of the movie is highly satirical of Disney, with their cookie cutter princes and princesses. The main character of Shrek is a fat ogre who baths in mud and eats his own ear wax. The general message of the movie is that anyone can have a happy ending and get the princess, as well as never be ashamed of what you are because if someone truly loves you they wont care what you are or what you look like. The soundtrack to this move was quite modern for the time and much of his movie is just making fun of Disney and that is what brings in some of the comedy. The creators obviously decided that early on the would go of the standard Disney formulae, that being hero must go and save the princess, often finding a quirky, sometimes an animal, sidekick to help with the filler. This help the Script writers go off on Disney in more that subtle ways. This along with the Slap-stick humour really makes me laugh. The Editing was done well, and you can see this in the movie as all the shots really flow together and makes for a fun viewing experience. There are some shots that I think are especially cool, one being when Shrek has just saved Fiona and they must now loose the dragon who has taken a shine to Donkey. This results in Shrek using a sword and the dragon’s chain, interlocking it around a huge room with big pillars for the dragon to weave in and out of before they run out making it impossible for the dragon to get them. This movie was a big deal at the time as something like it had never been done before. It got an amazing sequel, a poor 3rd act and a weird end that I never really understood. Nevertheless, Shrek will always be a timeless classic. In the end I think that Shrek is a great movie with a great soundtrack.
