Blade runner 1982 (Mise-en-scène)

Verisimilitude is the appearance of being true or real. A film that shows this is “Passengers” directed by Mortem Tyldum and also has Chris Pratt as Jim and Jennifer Lawrence as Aurora. This film is about a man who wakes up in space in the middle of space in a spaceship and he is in his pod and his pod malfunctions and he is released early while everyone is sleeping. He walks around the spaceship alone and lives out a few days till he finds a girl called Aurora and he thinks of releasing her and ends up doing it so that they can live together until they die as everyone else is being preserved in pods. She finds out and doesnt talk to him and then the ship is about to blow up and Jim uses a shield and risks his life to save the spaceship and then Jim and Aurora end up living the rest of their life together. This is shown at the end when everyone wakes up and there are plants and its full of life showing that they lived their life and it shows that they died together. This shows verisimilitude as even though its in space all the cinematography and costumes are realistic. The costumes are also very believable as they are plain and simple

The work of Cindy Sherman:
American photographer Cindy Sherman is known for her elaborately “disguised” self-portraits that focus on social role-playing and sexual stereotypes. She uses the different aspects of Mise En Scene to create different characters or settings. She is very talented and can make some really excellent transformations as seen in the photos bellow, as she goes form what looks like a librarian to a trashy trailer park woman. the series of pictures show the transformation she went through using makeup, props and costumes.
Mise En Scene – the arrangement of the scenery, props, etc. on the stage of a theatrical production or on the set of a film. It is the visuals of the film so anything that can be seen is part of the mise en scene. What creates a mise en scene is?
1. Setting
This can reveal a lot about the characters mood or life. For example, if the setting is someone’s bedroom and they have gaming posters then they are clearly someone that likes playing video games.
1. Décor
Décor is usually symbolic of something in the story. For example, colour can have deeper meaning about the character so black is usually associated with death or if there is large rugs or polished floors then the owner could be quite rich.
1. Lighting
Different lighting usually suggests different genres or the feeling of the scene. If it is dark, then it could be a dramatic or horror film. Bright lighting normally means a lighter hearted film such as a comedy.
1. Depth of Space
This is the distances between objects, people and everything else in the scene as well as how the camera moves, positioned and focused. Larger and clearer things on screen bring the viewers’ attention to them and contrasts them to other things in the scene.
1. Costumes and Makeup
What a character wears, looks like and how they wear it is crucial to portraying that character. Makeup can also bring out facial shapes and details, such as lots of black makeup may mean that there is a lot of darkness within the character.
Bellow are some of the photos we took in our lesson on Mise En Scene, we used different costumes, sets and lighting to get the feel of the pictures right.
Performance arts: Things that happen in real time. An example of this is the broadway show “Wicked”. As you go to the theatre and the arts are performed right in front of you.
The Representational Arts: This is art that is shown through literature or photographic or painted art. An example is the Mona Lisa.
The Recording Arts: This gives a more direct path between the show/film and the person. An example of this is, is any music or film that you can watch/stream on Amazon Prime Video.
A film that blurs boundaries is “lord of the rings”, as it uses CGI really well and the editing isn’t clunky. They were able to make a gremlin with 2 personalities believable and its meant to be a fantasy, however, with scenery and props they were able to make it believable.
Best picture: Just go with it
Best director: Taika Waititi
Best actor: Darren Criss
Best actress: Jennifer Aniston
Best soundtrack: Guardians of the galaxy vol. 2
What makes a good film?
I think that many factors go into what makes a good film and there are so many films I could write about but the film I have chosen to write about is It chapter 2 as I was impressed when I went to go watch it. It was a horror, but it also has comedic aspects. The film was based the Stephen King novel and represents the bravery of a group of individuals and to show that things that happen in the past stay with you. The film was about an ancient clown who has haunted a town named “Derry” and in the prequel it shows kids taking down the clown called pennywise, however, in “It chapter 2” it shows them as adults as they have all eventually been drawn back to the town after 27 years. It ends when they all shout belittling words at the clown which makes him feel weak as he feeds on fear and it ends up killing him however one of the main characters die while they try and kill them. I think this is a good ending as it allows production to make another sequel and it makes people interested, for what’s to come. There are many jump scares in the film but many comedic scenes to juxtapose scariness and the light heated jokes of the film. This film must have been hard to edit as it was 2 hours and 50 minutes but it was all put together perfectly and because of that the film flows well from scene to scene and isn’t chunky. The scenery was the town of Derry but when they went into the sewers there was so much scenery, there were ancient bones, caves, tunnels they weren’t always in focus but in different parts of the films they were emphasised. The scenery was impeccable because everything was so realistic, and you could see that it was a high budget film as everything was well made. In a horror film the soundtrack is one of the main things that is important as it is used to build up tension and also once tension is built, they use sound to create that effect of a jump scare. The film was shot in all different angles with high definition cameras to emphasise certain characters and to shoot scenes from different perspectives which allows the people watching to watch it from all perspectives.
