Cinema going in Jersey

In the “Golden Age” of cinema (1930s – 1960s) there were only four cinemas (Wests, Odeon, New Era and the Forum) in Jersey, each only having one screen. This meant that choice in what you can go watch is limited.

Currently, there is only one cinema (Cineworld) in Jersey and it has 10 screens which have less seating than the old cinemas, however this means that customers have more choice on what they can go watch.

There are no more independent cinemas in Jersey, as Cineworld is a commercial cinema. But once a year for a week films are shown at Howard Davis Park.

Over the years, the number of cinema screens have increased, but the number of independent cinemas have decreased. I think this is because consumers want more choice and they demand to watch more popular films, instead of art films.
