Diegetic & Non diegetic sound

Diegetic Sound: In Shaun of the Dead, Diegetic sounds are used throughout the record scene, It is firstly used when the News reporter is explaining the zombie virus on the TV, It is then used through dialogue between the characters. Finally, it is used when the zombie growls and moans.

Non diegetic – In Shaun of the Dead, Non diegetic sounds are used when there is a buildup to create suspense, it is also used when the characters fight the zombies and music plays.

Sound

Diegetic sound: Is any sound that the character or characters on screen can hear.

Non-diegetic sound: Any sound that audience can hear but the characters cannot.

Sound editor: collects the sound needed for the film, often recording using a boom pole. They can record sound of screen or make sound for the film.

Sound mixer: often post production, adjusting balancing and using EQ the sound. This is used to create a desired effect in the film, either by making the sound effects louder vs the dialogue which is quiet to make the scene seem busy and loud.

Non-diegetic and degetic sound examples

Digetic sound is the sound that the characters on screen can hear.

Examples on Shaun of the dead:

Non-diegetic sound is the sound that the audience can hear but the characters on screen cannot.

Sound editor: This is the person responsible for arranging sound recordings for the preparation of the final sound mixing or mastering for any type of digital media like television or film.

Sound mixer: This is the person responsible for recording all of the sound during the set for television or a film.

Diegetic Sound: This is sound that the characters and the audience can hear.

Non-Diegetic Sound: This is the sound that the audience can hear but not what the characters in the film can hear.

Diegetic Sound:

Non-Diegetic Sound

  • ‘Atmos’ Sound (created to build tension)
  • Music in the background (Record vinyl scene)

Foley Artist: This is the person who adds in sound during the post-production of the film. For example, the Foley Artist will recreate sound effects like footsteps if they were lost or weren’t recorded in the scene.

  • Wooden creaks (Old shipping pallet)
  • Cigarette inhale (Saran wrap)
  • Stacks of cash (Old deck of cards)
  • Fire (Potato chip bag)
  • Horse Hooves (Coconuts)

Sound Motif: This is the sound that is associated with the entrance of a particular character, setting, situation or a breakthrough idea in the film. The purpose of the sound motif is to condition the audience emotionally for the intervention, arrival or actions of a particular character. A film that uses sound motif is Star Wars IV: A New Hope, where Darth Vader appears often.

Voice over/Narration: This is a sound device where one hears the voice of the character or narrator but the character in question is in fact not speaking those words or screen.This is achieved in the film, Fight Club (1999).

Sound mixer – They serve as a sound recording during filming, and are responsible for recording and balancing the audio effects on set.

Sound Editor –  Responsible for selecting and assembling sound recordings in preparation for the final sound mixing or mastering.

Examples of diegetic (charcaters can hear) and non diegetic sound in Shaun Of the Dead:

Diegetic: Dialogue as need to hear the conversation between the two characters, throwing sounds, sound of tv in the background, zombie noises, non verbal sounds (screams)

Non Diegetic: music in the background when they realize there is a problem builds tension, some sound when they pick up objects

Synchronous sound: sound that is matched with a an action

Asynchronous sound: sound that is not matched with an action

Diegetic Sound –

In the scene with the TV, playing the news, a diegetic sound is used. The sound coming from the television, of the news presenter talking is a diegetic sound because the characters on set can hear the television, and so can the audience. This is used in order to present the situation to the audience and also to show the audience the character’s reactions to finding out this news.

Non-Diegetic Sound –

In the fighting scene against the male and the female zombies, background music is used. This background music is a non-diegetic sound because the audience can hear it but the characters on screen cannot. This background music was used in order to create a more exciting and interesting mood for the audience to watch.Image

Synchronous / Asynchronous Sound​

Synchronous sound is sound that is matched with the action and movements being viewed.

E.G Whiplash final scene when other instruments where added to performance.

Asynchronous sound is used when the director wants to create tension as the viewer can hear a sound but can not see its source. Sometimes the audience can’t hear the sound that the character inside the film can hear.​

Sound Editor vs. Sound mixer

There are many different roles that come into creating a film. Two of these being the Sound Editor and the Sound Mixer.

A Sound Editor is a creative professional responsible for selecting and assembling sound recordings in preparation for the final sound mixing or mastering.
