Props – the baseball bat with nails in it is an iconic prop in Stranger Things as it is used to slay the demodogs in Season 2. Steve Harrington is protecting the kids from the demodogs and trying to win back Nancy Wheeler with his heroics, however this does not work.
Costumes – In the movie Jumanji 4 teens get taken into a computer game where they have to complete the game to get out. The costumes in this are fitting as it is a safari/adventure game so the costumes are what we would imagine someone like Indian Jones to wear.
Hair and Make-Up – Bohemian Rhapsody is a movie based on the life of Freddie Mercuary and his band, Queen. The make up in it is really well done as Rami Malek had a prosthetic nose and a lot of make up on and with it he looked pretty close to how Freddie Murcuary did.
Set Design – the Chamber of Secrets from Harry Potter was a studio made to look like an under ground lair. It was really well made as none, or at least very little would have been made from real concrete, of the snakes or walkway with the water on the floor to link to the fact it is in the plumbing and that some snakes like damp and dark places. This could also be to increase the tension in the scene as the dark shadows make it hard to see things.
Location – Game of Thrones was filmed in Northern Ireland, close to Belfast, but you wouldn’t think so looking at these frames one from Game of Thrones and one from Peter McKinnon’s vlog when the location scout for Game of Thrones took him to these places. This shows with different weather conditions and clever use of Mise En Scene can make a big difference.
Lighting – This scene from Bladerunner (Scott, 1982) is near the end of the film when Decker is trying to retire his last replicant, Roy, when Roy kills himself. This scene is a good example of how lighting should be used in films. It is low key lighting. This is effective as we can only see half the frame with the rest of it unknown.
Film Stock and Aspect Ratio – Skyfall (2012) is a typically James Bond film. I feel it is a good example of film stock as the colour grade of increased blue and less green gives it a cold feeling; this is combined with the fog, mist and rain to make the scene feel more dramatic and it adds to the cinematic feeling. The film also has an aspect ratio of 2.39:1 which is usually for film as usually it is 21:9.
Space – The remake of Alice in Wonderland (2010) uses space well in this scene. It does this by making your attention focus on Alice but then drift to the background which looks a lot bigger than her. This is unusual for us as humans are normally larger than the plants in the background.; a way this could have been achieved would be to lower the camera and shot upwards towards Alice. Also depth of field helps draw out attention to Alice is through Alice (foreground) being in focus but the background being out of focus; this would be achieved through a low depth of field such as f/4.0.
