Blade runner mise en scene

A key scene in the movie Bladerunner the utilities the potential of mise en scene is when the character of Deckard is chasing the replicant through the windows. This scene plays to Bladerunner’s overall strengths of creative and stylist set design. The costumes in this scene are great with Deckard’s brown trench coat giving the impression that he is a grizzled detective since that style is commonly associated with the styles. The replicant see through raincoat is also a good use of costume design as it allows for the unique neon light and visuals to reflect of it, as well as helping to make the world the movie is set in feel unique due to the difference in appearance to normal clothing.

The set design of the florescent umbrella lights, lighting up Deckard’s gun as he shoots the replicant. A well the design of the clothing shops the replicant runs through is full of very bright fluorescent colors contrasted with a dark dingy background. As well as the store being surrounded by mannequins showcasing the movies overall plot of artificial humans.

Lastly the editing in this scene is exceptionally well with the scene slowing down when the replicant is killed to emphasise her death to the audience. As well as cutting to other replicant to shop his grief at her death and his resentment towards Deckard. Overall the edit does a great job a conveying a sense of loss for a character the scene previous conveyed for you to route against.

Camera Angles Task

Use of eye level angle : Wolf of Wall Street (Martin Scorsese, 2013) the eye level shot is a very neutral shot and causes a very neutral effect on the audience. The only effect it creates on the audience is a sense of verisimilitude and inclusion. This is quite specific to the wolf of wall street and the effect is created when the fourth wall is broken. Since the actors are at eye level it makes the audience feel similar or connected to the actor as if there is no difference in social status or power. D.O.P’s will use this to make the audience feel more included in a movie.

Birds eye view : Avengers assemble (Joss Whedon, 2012). There is a particular scene in this film where a Birds eye view is used to look down upon Chris Hemsworth’s “Thor” and Chris Evan’s “Captain America”. The D.O.P has chosen to use this shot because it causes the audience to believe that , in this case, Thor and Captain America are vulnerable or at least weaker than what is looking down on them. It feels like the camera angle is actually what is looking down on them as if the audience is the “monster” towering over Thor and Captain America (a hypothetical example) this makes the audience feel dominant.

Canted angle shot :Inception (Christopher Nolan, 2010) uses the canted shot very well. Generally, the canted shot is used when a character is sick or drunk or when something abnormal is happening. In this case it is the most latter of the three. In inception canted angles are often used to exaggerate the abnormality of the scene. It really makes it obvious to the audience that something is off and not right.

Shot Distance Task

Use of extreme closeup : The Blair Witch Project (1999, Eduardo Sanchez) this scene uses an extreme closeup of roughly a quarter of one of the character’s faces. This shot was used to help the audience focus on  he emotions displayed in the scene with great detail.

Use of medium shot : Zodiac (David Fincher, 2007) The medium shot  is very commonly used for dialogues. It causes the audience to focus on a small group of people, so one can be focused on a single person or multiple whenever they choose. This is helpful when the speaker changes but a shot change may be unnecessary, at this distance the other speaker may well be in the frame and so the audience can divert their gaze to the new speaker without needing a shot change

Long shot : Pirates Of The Caribbean Dead Man’s Chest (Gore Verbinski, 2006) uses a long shot in the scene when Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) is running away from a tribe of cannibals. The D.O.P has specifically chosen this shot so that the audience can focus on both the foreground and the background at the same time. This quickly and easily gives context to the situation. For example here it lets the audience know what he is running away from, however this time it is all in one long shot that we can see this rather than two more focused shots.

Use of extreme long shot : Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Alfonso Cuaron, 2004) uses an extreme long shot of a bridge to show off the surrounding area. This creates a sense of awe and romanticism as one can see how small one is when compared to a huge bridge or a mountain etc.

Camera angles – task 3

Birds eye shot-

This shot in Black panther shows Killmonger and t’challa falling through a mine fighting as they fall, this shot is very effective and makes the fight seem very genuine, as if they are fighting for something they believe in and care about, they are willing to throw each other down a 100ft odd drop in order to win, also this scene takes them to a train track where an emotional and exciting final fight takes place, so this scene and shot is important for setting up the ending of the film.

High angle shot-

Also from black panther, this extremely high and far out shot happens just after killmongers death, I think this is here as almost a representation of killmongers loss, this shot is just before the end of the film and is a final look over the country of Wakanda before the film ends. Almost like kill mongers final reminisence of Wakanda  before he dies.

Low angle shot-

This low angles shot of the camera looking up at groot is an incredibly emotional scene for the audience as this shot is from the rest of the crews perspective almost looking at him mutter the words “we are groot”. This is emotional as as we knew it the only words groom was capable of saying where “I am groot” so for him accepting the rest of his crew as almost family saying they are the same then sacrificing himself for the survival of the team.

Shots, movement and angles – activity 2

Close up –

This close up shot of the character of spiderman dying in his mentor, tony stark’s,  arms is used to press emotion onto the audience. The two characters have a sort of father son dynamic as peter doesn’t have a father figure and tony wants a child, because of this a relationship has been set up with the characters across   a few prior films that really makes this shot heartbreaking for fans and used to show the weight of thanos’ victory on the other characters as well as the audience.

Big close up –

This close up is mainly used to divert the audiences expectations, as as Thor arrives at the big final fight in the film everything is set up to be a last minute victory for the heroes, and this close up of the “bad guy” of the film, Thanos, with a giant axe in his chest and a pained look on his face gives an audience the impression that the heroes had won, this is also shown in the positioning of the characters, while thor is higher up and holding thanos’ head while thanos looks so weak he cant even hold his head up straight,  however at the last second the bad guy completes his plan and the heroes lose, which has a massive impact on the audiance as it was the opposite of what they expected.

Long Shots –

These long shots are used to show the scale of the war. They are there to show the stakes of this fight, the characters know that if they lose this fight they lose half the people on the planet, so they need as many people as they can get, and these shots show the audience how many people are risking their own life for a greater cause, these shots inspire the audience and make them feel their heroes have a chance, which in this film is important as this whole fight is used to build up the audiences expectations of the heroes victory, only to crush these expectations with thanos’ eventual victory.

Cinematography Activity 2

An example of a medium long shot is in the film The Dark Knight (2008, Christopher Nolan). This had the effect that it presented the severity of the explosion.Image result for long shots in film

An example of a close up shot is The Shining (1980, Stanley Kubrick) I think that the effect was that the viewer was that they see the antagonists face and the emotions that they are portraying.

An example of an extreme close up is in Revenge Of The Sith (2005, George Lucas) I think that the viewer would notice the details of General Grievous

Diegetic gaze

Image result for saving private ryan close ups

“Saving Private Ryan” (Steven Spielberg,1998) uses diegetic gaze well because it helps the audience to focus on the characters in the closeup rather than the background. The background has been blurred out and therefore one can only focus on the actor in the foreground. Due to this, the audience can really feel the emotion and the audience gets a very good idea of what is actually happening to the character specifically rather than just seeing the development of the narrative.

Use of extra diegetic gaze

“the Good, the Bad and the Ugly” (1966, Sergio Leone) uses extra diegetic close-up shots very well. Generally, they are used to show the raw emotion that the actor is displaying. A close up on an angry face will make the audience feel their rage, a close up on a scared person will make them feel their anxiety. extra diegetic close-up shots are very good at making the audience feel empathetic towards the actors as the emotions are so powerful, it is as if the audience are feeling it themselves.

Example of hair and makeup

Image result for the thing transformation

my example of good use of hair and makeup comes from the 1982 film ‘The Thing’. At this time cgi was not a developed asset and was still in its very early stages, so the producers if this film opted for a more practical approach and where able to create a shocking believable transformation. The way gore was still able to be implemented in such a good way form its time allowed the film to be scarier and more shocking for the audiance.
