Quotes

Characters have to make sacrifices. To really, really feel the true emotion and the hero’s journey, they have to go through trials, and those trials could cost them something.  Joe Russo

I think of a hero as someone who understands the degree of responsibility that comes with his freedom.  Bob Dylan

I played characters with villainous aspect. But out-and-out villain? No.  Clint Eastwood

Audiences just naturally hate me on screen. I could play a role in a tuxedo, and people would think I was rotten. You can do much more with a villain part. Lee Van Cleef

How Cameron evolves from Leone to have his own take

Cameron evolves Leone’s original formula to bring his own style to the table by using many of his own narrative traits to create a film what does differ in some aspects of Leone’s narrative. In TG,TB,TU the trio of main characters are following the normal characteristics of previous westerns however in T2 Cameron changes two of his trio’s characters to create a different dimension to the film as a whole. The use of a female main character allows a different interpretation and viewpoint what differs from Leone’s style of having a male dominant story, while lending to how Cameron tends to use strong, empowered female characters. While the idea of using non-human characters in his film adds to it with the T-800 who adds emotion despite being a machine. Leone on the other hand strays away from showing emotion. The T-800 brings emotion as Cameron want’s to use him as a another layer and connect all the characters more fluidly to show weakness unlike Leone who wants to have his characters be emotionless going more into the idea of being a anti-hero or heroine. Compare both trio’s the only similarity of both of them is the roles of those characters.

Comparative study notes

How the Sphagetti Western allows for innovation in film genre’s by inspiring a innovative narrative structure format?

  • Propps characters, anti heroes
  • Film Structure
  • Where they become similar, auteur theory, directors ideas in story
  • Western to a Western Sci-fi
  • Where Cameron innovates and evolves from Leone’s structure

Propps Characters

Man with No Name=Sarah Connor, the hero

Tuco= T-800(Arnold Schwarzenegger), the helper

Angel Eyes=T-1000, the villain

Gold=John Connor, the dispatcher, the prize

General=Miles Bennet Dyson, The donor

Bounty Hunters=Dr Peter Silberman, False heroes

Similarities, refers to man with no name as Clint and T-800 as Arnold

The two movies main characters can be seen as clear parallels to each other accept for the Gold and John Connor what represent ideally the same things but are visualized as different.

Clint and Sarah are their movies main characters despite being in ensemble casts are standouts through being the two characters who keep the film grounded. Both are serious characters who overcome difficult situations in the film with Clint walking through a desert with no water and Sarah in a mental asylum. However both are these anti-heroes where the audience sees their true personalities despite both clearly trying to hide who they truly are, these glimpses can be seen by Sarah going to kill Dyson in front of his family while Clint committing fraud, from saving criminals from hanging who he gave into the law. The idea that both characters are not truly heroes but act out in heroic emotions show. The fact they are these flawed action heroes appeal clearly in the movies and has been clearly used by Terminator 2 to differentiate their cast as much as possible.

Clint: Last night. You see in this world there’s two kinds of people my friend – those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig.

Sarah: Fucking men like you built the hydrogen bomb. Men like you thought it up. You think you’re so creative. You don’t know what it’s like to really create something, to create a life, feel it growing inside you. All you know how to create is death and destruction -!

Also both need a distinct style to show their true identities

An antihero or anti-heroine is a main character in a story who lacks conventional heroic qualities and attributes such as idealism, courage and morality. Although antiheroes may sometimes perform actions that are morally correct, it is not always for the right reasons, often acting primarily out of self-interest or in ways that defy conventional ethical codes.

Tuco and Arnold are similar to each other by the idea you don’t know if you want to trust either character as Tuco is a bandit who continues to rival with Clint while Arnold is a replica of the first films previous villain and you don’t know if he will change sides. While both characters become more human further into the movie by the idea that Tuco becomes a friend to Clint while Arnold becomes like a father to John in the movie. As well both are used for a comedic affect.

Angel Eyes and T-100 are presented as the same person as both are emotionless killers who are tracking down the main characters. Both also represent the Law in the movies.

The ending scenes between both have similarities by how its standoff between three characters. The villains both die with both ending in a pit. While the only big difference is Clint shoots the noose before Tuco is hung while Sarah lets Arnold destroy itself.

Final project Director screenplay draft

Bold Text is the action the criminal is doing while doing the monologue.

Fade to black

Criminal

Remember a time when you were so innocent, no one could see who you really were. I can tell you I never learnt or felt that one particular feeling, from day 1 my path was always to a life of crime. You can always try and be better but it never feels right. Black Screen for entire part of this speech.

EXT. PATH. DAY

Criminal

At age of 15 I was already out my 2nd visit to juvy for petty pickpocketing, Walking down a road in prison uniform and a bag. and that wasn’t the worst thing I did at that age,

EXT. CAR PARK . DAY

Criminal

I vandalized, stole cars, robbed, and even started working for a local car salesman to vandalise vehicles Scratching a logo into the car, also doing transferring jobs if you know what I mean. Putting a package into the bin being cautious. Did I feel guilty? No. Why would I, it was good pay, this made me feel alive. Counting the money in his hand.

INT. LIVING ROOM .DAY

Criminal

Yeah there is danger to this life. Yet if you learn early enough and you are good at it why stop, what am I doing wrong at the end of the day? Anyone caught in my cross fire deserves it. They deserve it by the way they speak of me, look at me or come at me. At the end of the day I get reputation as the more I do brings me more respect and power than having some sort of dead ass job. I am hated by the uncaring higher class yet they didn’t realise what I would become one day. One day they would be asking me for favours, or to corrupt systems, or certain assignments what could send me down for multiple life sentences. Shows beer bottles, money ash trays in dark room with their feet up on the table.

INT. CARPARK. NIGHT

Criminal

If you want to hear everything you’re going to have to listen from the fucking beginning. (This part sounds like it’s a recording). A person in a suit looking at them self in the mirror.

Sound Design 2

Sound Designers for sci-fi, Predator sound designer, Charles. L Campbell (E.T). These sound designers are the inspiration for this scene as they are able to combine common earthly sounds with unusual, unheard of sounds to create a sci-fi experience.

Sound designer action, Mark Mangini (Mad Max), Dane Davis (The Matrix). These sound designers have inspired me to use common action film sounds but at a quick pace and at a slow pace as that allows to build a more entertaining scene overall compared to having a scene with normal sound effects.

Auteur Theory Directors

Sergio Leone, the motifs of Leone is how he uses a very similar cast with his own style. In the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly he uses many of his many characteristics in film. This is seen by the:

  • Opening titles what are always the same what he uses to add his own artistic style at the beginning.
  • The main principle actors are made up of a 11 people who play different roles in the dollar trilogy.
  • The Mexican standoff by itself is a trademark of Leone.
  • The shots of the eyes to signify conflict and tension is a clear style choice by Leone as well.

James Cameron is a hard one to decide if he is a auteur or not as he doesn’t stay with one genre or has clear film style. However there are stick out things what can lead to you considering him as auteur:

  • His way of balancing multiple protagonists in a movie.
  • How he handles females as the main hero and are the ones who are usually made to be both strong and compelling.
  • He casts actors he’s worked with before occasionally.
  • He is able to make nonhuman people feel real and give them emotion.
  • His biggest detail of him being an auteur is how ambitious and incredible is his cinematography is in movies.

Cinematography 2

Horror Film cinematographers, Neal Frederick’s (Blair Witch Project), Pablo Rosso (REC 2). These 2 cinematographers are going to be the cinematographers I am going to be inspired by as both shoot in first person and have been behind the most classic POV horror films. Rosso’s switch between first person and security cameras will be definitely the main inspiration of the whole scene though in general as it shows different types of cinematography.

Sport Film cinematographers, James Crabe ( Rocky), Maryse Alberti (Creed), Vittario Starrio (Apocalypse Now). Crabe and Alberti’s styles will be the main inspiration from the shots as they are able to show ambition and ability of a person through camera shots. Starrio’s scene from Apocalyse Now, on the boat will also be inspiration as I want to show enjoyment in the character.

What I am aiming with these 2 scenes is to have them both being able to show a complete contrast. What I mean by that is the both style and movement of the camera as in the Horror scene it will itself contrast from switching between a still and moving camera what may be presented as a messy style while on the other hand the sports film will be clean and continuously moving with many different shots what will present a cleaner style.
